NOT FOR BEGINNERS - CAMPING AT TRAILHEAD IN COLD WEATHER

This is the 3rd highest 14er in CA. We will be camping at the trailhead and get an early start in the morning of the hike.
Driving to the trailhead: It is a 5-hour drive from Las Vegas to the Barcroft trailhead. The last 16 miles are on unpaved rough road. High Clearance Vehicle is strongly recommended.
Camping at trailhead: Once we get to the trailhead, you will need to setup how you will spend the night: in a tent or in your car.
Weather at trailhead and hike: Weather at the TH will be COLD in 20 - 30s F range at night. High is forecast to be around 40 degrees F during the day. It will be windy and cold. Wear layers. Bring poncho, rain jacket and wind breaker.
Wind: This is a remote wilderness area with not much vegetation. It is typically windy, around 20 mph. Plan for protecting yourself from cold. Pack layers.
Rain: There is currently a 13% chance of rain in the forecast. Poncho/rain jacket to be on the safe side.
Water: There is no water around in that area. Pack all the water you think you will need for camping and especially while hiking. Plan for at least 3 liters of water just for the hike.
Altitude Sickness You must have already done some high altitude hikes in the recent 2-3 weeks. We will be hiking at a slow pace. If anyone starts getting sick, we will stop and rest.

WHAT TO BRING Backpack: to carry any layers of clothing Water: 3 liters at least Food: Snacks, electrolytes, lunch for the peak Shoes: Hiking shoes or trail runners. Clothing: Extra layers for cold weather, especially a rain jacket; gaiters Sun Protection: Sunscreen, sunglasses, SPF clothing, hat, etc. Headlamp: Always Helmet: Yes Beanie: Highly recommended to keep your head warm Gloves: Yes, to keep your hands and fingers warm Trekking poles: Helpful, especially in the scree

Safety is the first priority. Therefore, all hikers in our group, including another leader who joins us, will stay behind the leader.
Group Hiking: Stay with the group behind the leader. If you don’t want to stay with us, you can always go hiking on your own, though it’s not recommended. Don’t run ahead. If you start to get too far behind, shout ahead before you’re out of range for someone to hear you. I always endeavor to keep track of everyone’s progress, but ultimately it’s your responsibility to communicate what you need.
Please be aware that your organizers are not tour guides and are not park/BLM rangers. Expect the same risks and take the same precautions you would take if you were hiking alone. You are solely responsible for your own safety and well-being.
